Life-long equestrians lost ten horses and a pony that died in a fire Tuesday at their Salem Township barn.
The couple – he’s 77 and she’s 82 -- discovered their barn in the 6100 block of Six Mile Road fully engulfed in flames at 6 p.m., Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Lisa King said today. Nestled in an area between Ann Arbor and Northville north of M-14 dotted with horse barns, theirs was destroyed in the blaze.
“They’re just devastated,” King said just after talking to the family this afternoon. King did not release their name, the name of the barn or the specific location. “I think it was just overwhelming.”
The fire does not appear to be suspicious, she added. Calls to Salem Township Fire Chief Mark Hamilton were not returned Tuesday.
