The owners of a Boone County farm are trying to find a good home to take on a horse a friend of theirs found abandoned in freezing temperatures.
Meet Lucky. Gary Liedberg of Garden Prairie found him wandering these fields in southern Boone County earlier this month. He was cold and looked like he hadn't eaten in days. Liedberg says his family is the only one in the area to keep horses, so he led lucky back to his farm using a set of jumper cables. "I don't like seeing any animal starve. That's just kind of a natural thing to do, to take care of the animal. So, we have animals, and I know the animal just needed food, so get him in, get him shelter, and take care of him, and find if we can find a home for him," says Liedberg. The Liedberg's contacted Boone County Animal Control, which hooked them up with Lora Bertell and her husband. They own a horse rescue and rehabilitation center where Lucky is now being treated. "I think he's healthier already. You know, he's going to be able to fight any kind of thing that might come his way. So, now that he's got more stamina and strength, he'll be able to fight off anything, whereas he wouldn't have been able to before. Something like the flu could have put him down," says Bertell. The Liedberg's are working with Boone County Animal Control in trying to figure out who abandoned Lucky. They ask if you have any information to contact them. Bertell says she's always looking for volunteers and donations to help rehabilitate lucky and the rest of her horses. If you're interested in helping out, her web address is: www.bertellfarms.org
