In July, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began rounding up more than 1,200 federally protected wild horses on public lands in Nevada. The use of helicopters to run terrified horses over miles of scorching desert resulted in serious injuries and the deaths of more than 20 horses.

Two men accused of gunning down five wild mustangs in Nevada last year entered not guilty pleas before a U.S. magistrate Tuesday as horse protection activists outraged by the slaughter watched from the courtroom gallery.

Four-year-old Samantha Sillero loved riding horses with her parents, and she never had any problems with the animals until the fatal accident over the weekend at a rodeo event, family members said Monday.

Samantha died after being trampled by a horse. The accident happened at a rodeo arena in the 13700 block of Karalis in south Houston around 10:35 p.m. Sunday, police said.

A major roundup of an estimated 2,500 wild mustangs in Northern Nevada set for Monday has protestors calling for Congress to step in.

Wild horse advocates gathered outside the entrance of Red Rock Canyon, managed by Bureau of Land Management, on the eve of the roundup to make their voices heard.
