The loud whup-whup-whup of helicopter blades pounded out over Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora Tuesday for the second day of the park's wild horse roundup.
A tick-borne disease known as equine piroplasmosis has been confirmed on a ranch in South Texas. Additional testing is being conducted to determine the extent of infection. Horses on the ranch are quarantined to their premises, and a thorough disease investigation is underway.
Unlike the 180 existing, unmanned federal wild-horse areas, the new, staffed preserves, including one in the East and one in the Midwest, would seek tourists.
